I BEFORE E
“I before E except after C” only when it has
long e sound. Always check the sound
and confirm the rule.
Points to be remembered:
(1) While adding –ed, –er, est suffix to the y ending words like cry, it will be pronounced as long “i” not long “e.” cry + ed = cried,
(2) While adding s to y ending root word like fancy, it will be spelled as ‘ie’ only not ‘ei’sincethereason is different. (yis analternative forendingi)Fancy+s=Fancies.
Exceptions : seize, vein, weird, their, feisty, foreign
